An Enduring Company
East Meets West
In 1989, Dr. Min Kao and Gary Burrell founded Garmin on their shared vision of integrating global positioning system (GPS) technology into navigational devices for consumers. They successfully brought together their diverse backgrounds, represented by the open space that’s both Zen garden and Kansas prairie at the heart of our headquarters. With offices located around the world and more than 10,000 associates, diversity remains a top priority for Garmin.
Great ideas sometimes come from singular inspiration, but more often they’re a result of collaborative effort. Garmin fosters an environment of cooperation and participation within our work spaces and without. To spark engagement and team building, we sponsor on-site events, such as seminars and cookouts, as well as opportunities to serve our community through philanthropic organizations and services.
Cleaner and Greener
We take our responsibilities seriously and are committed to being a good corporate citizen. Our contributions to a healthy, sustainable world include:
- A safe and clean work environment
- Reduced energy usage and packaging waste
- Corporate philanthropy
- Opportunities for associates for charitable giving and service
- Ethical and sustainable practices
The foundation of our culture is honesty, integrity, and respect for associates, customers, and business partners. Each associate is fully committed to serving customers and fellow associates through outstanding performance and accomplishing what we say we will do.
I can honestly say this is the best place I’ve ever worked. I’ve loved all my jobs here. That’s why I’ve stayed for so long. The work is always challenging—but in a good way.

Steve R.Principal Software Engineer/Technical Fellow,
There's a significance to the product that I work on. It helps pilots fly safely. And it's complicated, so even when you continue to work on the same product, you still learn every day.

The Basics and Beyond
Direct deposit isn’t anything to brag about. Garmin provides all the benefits that most companies of our size and stature supply, such as health, dental and vision insurance, long- and short-term disability, retirement plan, paid time off and so on. But some of our benefits go above and beyond, put in place to keep up with an evolving marketplace, support our innovation and encourage a healthy balance between work and life.
Full Healthcare Coverage
In surveys of health care benefits offered by comparable large technology companies, our plans consistently rank in the 90th percentile or higher. We offer a choice of three health insurance plans—with low or no premiums—plus dental and vision plans for you and your family. In addition, our associates have access to a health concierge service to help you find the best value in healthcare services.
Our retirement and savings plans rate 82% above the high-tech industry median. Our 401K retirement plan provides 5% of pay base contribution plus a match of 75 cents for every dollar you contribute to a maximum of 10% of your compensation. In addition, our employee stock purchase plan allows for shares to be bought at a 15% discount.
For the Health of It!, our company-wide voluntary wellness program, aims at increasing awareness and improving Garmin associates’ knowledge of their personal health. The program’s mission is to inspire and empower individuals to take responsibility for their own health through balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and awareness and education. Our tobacco-free campus lets everyone breathe easy.
At Garmin, we want our associates to take flight — literally. We offer financial assistance for the costs associated with pilot certification and ground school. We also provide reimbursement for a portion of the hourly rental rate when using participating vendors and clubs.
We know the importance of each waypoint on the way to completing a journey. As such, our associates are encouraged to develop their skills within the company. Professional development is supported by tuition reimbursement and training resources, up to $7,000 per associate each year, as well as internal recruitment efforts and a policy that prioritizes promoting from within the company.
In each of the communities in which we do business, Garmin has a strong philanthropic and civic presence. Our associates benefit from these connections in many ways, including through discounts on products and services, opportunities to attend sponsored events, such as free entry to races, and even help with work-life initiatives, such as adoption assistance.
